Has the Moe Girl Encyclopedia, with the introduction of paid memberships, also lost its original purpose? Moe Nan Encyclopedia is a non-commercial online encyclopedia with an ACGN (Anime, Comic, Game, and Novel) theme, powered by the MediaWiki software. It was created on October 11, 2010, by its founder, "Baskice." Moe Nan Encyclopedia adheres to the principle that "everything can be moe," focusing on the inclusion of female characters, moe anthropomorphism works, and related original creations. Due to its extensive content related to the world of 2D, it has been referred to as the "encyclopedia specifically designed for 2D enthusiasts." Due to the unique nature of the website, Moe Nan Encyclopedia is a "limited encyclopedia" dedicated to deepening its roots in the ACGN field. It mainly covers entries related to ACGN culture and internet culture. In today's world, where the 2D community is thriving, Moe Nan Encyclopedia diligently records the bits and pieces of ACGN culture, aligning itself with the needs of contemporary young people to some extent. Having been established for over a decade, Moe Nan Encyclopedia has documented more than 120,000 entries, making it one of the most outstanding and comprehensive encyclopedia websites in the Chinese-speaking internet. Its entries are detailed, comprehensive, and rigorous. They not only cite sources but also include additional annotations. As shown in the image, Moe Nan Encyclopedia incorporates a unique "strikethrough" and "black comedy" function. These seemingly "unserious" statements provide a distinct reading experience and enhance humor, setting it apart from other encyclopedias. Pop culture is inherently interactive, and Moe Nan Encyclopedia plays a role in "carrying the dissemination of 2D culture." While its entries and popular phrases continue to grow, it naturally becomes one of the record-keepers of contemporary internet pop culture. However, even such a "shrine" for countless 2D enthusiasts will eventually face a "transformation." Last month, Moe Nan Encyclopedia unexpectedly announced the launch of a paid membership service. While a variety of "paid memberships" are already common on video platforms, the sudden introduction of this service, considering the "non-profit" label associated with encyclopedia websites, has led to user discomfort and widespread criticism. Moe Nan Encyclopedia has always struggled, given the specific nature of its content that caters primarily to the 2D community. Furthermore, with its "non-profit" status, it has long relied on external donations to sustain its operations. The growth of the website, increasing traffic, and soaring operational costs have posed challenges to Moe Nan Encyclopedia. This is a common issue for encyclopedia websites, and even prominent platforms like Wikipedia have not been exempt from these difficulties. Moe Nan Encyclopedia's own entries documented that it barely achieved a balance between income and expenses two years after its founding, solely through donations and advertisements. However, this was only enough to keep the website running. Frequent server crashes, combined with external DDOS attacks, have left users with an unsatisfactory experience. These issues ultimately pointed to Moe Nan Encyclopedia's financial shortcomings, which have forced the website to intensify its advertising efforts to ensure the most basic user experience. Despite these efforts, financial constraints persisted. In 2020, the website was acquired by a company named "Shaoxing Moe Party," and Baskice lost the operational authority a year after the acquisition. Unfortunately, the acquisition did not significantly improve the website's management but did provide some financial benefits, particularly through collaborations with Shaoxing Moe Party's mobile game "Soul Artifact Academy." Users of Moe Nan Encyclopedia have noticed an increase in advertisements on the site, especially since the beginning of last year, which has sometimes interfered with the regular browsing experience. Moreover, during the 12th-anniversary celebration, Moe Nan Encyclopedia initiated another round of site maintenance. A month later, many entries were marked with "#" or harmonized and even deleted. Large-scale advertising had already hindered the browsing experience, and this action led to a collective outbreak of long-standing dissatisfaction, further damaging the website's reputation. What makes matters worse is that Moe Nan Encyclopedia's internal operations team has encountered frequent issues. These issues include a major event last year where entries related to "Azur Lane" were allegedly plagiarized from BWIKI and a translation thread on NGA for "Uma Musume Pretty Derby." To maintain its "non-profit" status, Moe Nan Encyclopedia cannot establish proper employment relationships with its editors. They rely solely on the goodwill of volunteers. With the decline in the quality of entries and the significant loss of editorial staff, Moe Nan Encyclopedia is undoubtedly plummeting at lightning speed. All these reasons have led Moe Nan Encyclopedia to attempt to alleviate operational pressures by introducing a "paid membership" model. This may well be its final attempt at salvation after a series of setbacks. Not everyone opposes the introduction of "paid memberships" by Moe Nan Encyclopedia. After all, it fundamentally does not affect the ability to access and read articles. Additionally, it has a significant advantage in the ACGN domain that is irreplaceable. However, who can guarantee that people's sentiments will not change? Bilibili, another representative of the ACGN field, serves as a good example in this context. Everyone hopes that Moe Nan Encyclopedia will improve, but those blinded by money do not include only Bilibili. As for whether Moe Nan Encyclopedia will tread the same path as Bilibili in the future, that remains to be seen.
