It's here, even worse than 'The Lord of the Rings: Gollum'! In this year's Cologne Gamescom, host Geoff Keighley announced that The Game Awards 2023 (TGA) will take place on December 7th. With TGA less than two months away, many gamers are getting excited. This year's lineup of games is not simply described as "luxurious." There are a plethora of titles with both critical acclaim and strong sales, and everyone is eager to see which game, among titles like "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2," "Starfield," "Final Fantasy XVI," "Resident Evil 4 Remake," and "Baldur's Gate 3," will come out on top. Of course, the anticipation for this year's TGA isn't just about curiosity regarding the "Game of the Year" winner. Gamers are also interested in the "worst game of the year," even though TGA doesn't officially have an award for it. There have been numerous poorly-received games in 2023, and it's shaping up to be a rather bizarre year in the gaming industry. If we only consider the ratings and historical player online rates, "The Gray Mountain Incident" would undoubtedly earn the title of "worst game of the year." However, when considering the IP's recognition and production scale, "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum" is arguably the lowest-scoring game overall. It seems that this year's "worst game of the year" will likely go to "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum." But the year 2023, which is about to end, continues to exhibit its "magical" qualities, and another "masterpiece" has appeared to challenge the position of "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum" for the "worst game of the year." On October 17th, a game called "Skull Island: Kong Rising" was released with almost no promotion. Due to its extremely poor graphics and bad controls, "Skull Island: Kong Rising" quickly surpassed "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum." Even well-known media outlets like IGN gave it a lower score (3 out of 10) compared to "Red Mist Island" and "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum," which both received 4s. Even before the official rating was revealed, IGN bluntly commented on their platform, "It might just be the worst game of 2023." The final rating caused many players to comment on IGN's official account, saying, "Giving it 3 points is too generous," making it clear that "Skull Island: Kong Rising" is a strong contender for the title of "worst game of the year." So, what is the "charm" of "Skull Island: Kong Rising" that makes it eclipse "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum"? Let's dive into the game and find out. Upon entering the game, players are greeted by a rough and grainy visual style reminiscent of old games from decades ago, giving the feeling of a PS2-era game. However, the graphics in "Skull Island: Kong Rising" may not even match those of "AAA" titles from the PS2 era. After a brief story introduction, players take on the role of young Kong and are guided through learning actions like "attack," "run," and "jump." The entire process can only be described as monotonous, with stiff movements, subpar character modeling, and almost no interactive combat feedback. This, combined with the bizarre appearance of "Kong's mom," which strains the player's credibility, likely led to many players being discouraged during the tutorial section. One might expect that the gameplay experience in "Skull Island: Kong Rising" would improve after the tutorial section, but it turns out that the game has already warned players to "leave this debacle" in the very beginning. Immediately after the tutorial, players face the game's first boss battle, where Kong's mom encounters a relentless "dinosaur" chasing her. The entire boss battle is designed to be extremely superficial, with both sides mostly just standing and exchanging punches, accompanied by various frame rate drops and clipping animations. The battle ends as soon as the "dinosaur's" health bar is depleted, concluding this awkward fight. After the boss battle, Kong's parents are killed in the storyline, and young Kong escapes from under the "dinosaur's" nose. This storyline is designed to be extremely absurd. There is no clear guidance for the player, and whether it's the main storyline or how to master skills, it's all up to the player to figure out. The game unlocks new skills with each point, but players who progress through the main storyline will only receive one point after the first boss battle, with no indication of how to obtain the remaining points. Ultimately, from the first chapter to the fifth chapter, the game repeats the process of battling monsters, leveling up, and learning new skills. During this time, no new gameplay elements are introduced. In other words, you can experience all the game's content in the first chapter. At this point, it's easy to see why "Skull Island: Kong Rising" has managed to surpass "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum." It showcases all its gameplay in the first chapter, and the following four chapters are all repetitions of the same process. Such design would have been hard for most players to accept even decades ago. Additionally, the game is not priced low, and the initial price in the Chinese region is 108 CNY, and it doesn't support the Chinese language. It's hard to see any reason to purchase this game. Currently, "Skull Island: Kong Rising" on Steam has only 57 reviews, mostly negative. IGN is the only media outlet willing to rate the game, and the game's media score is "not yet disclosed" due to a lack of samples. In all likelihood, "Skull Island: Kong Rising" will claim the title of "worst game of the year," especially given its strength in terms of IP recognition compared to "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum." In reality, "Skull Island: Kong Rising" has received significant attention online, with major gaming forums discussing this unexpected "debacle." Perhaps everyone is curious to see if it can beat "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum" to become the "worst game of the year." In conclusion, if you approach this game with a sense of curiosity, "Skull Island: Kong Rising" does provide some entertainment. However, there's no reason to purchase this game, as you can get a "AAA" title for the same price, and there are only a few months left in 2023. Let's see if any other contenders emerge to challenge "Skull Island: Kong Rising" in the coming months!
