What's the current status of those poorly-rated games from this year? As September approaches, there are only three months left in 2023, and many players are starting to consider the best game of the year. Some believe it's "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom," building upon the success of its predecessor. Others think it's "Resident Evil 4: Remake," which took game remakes to a whole new level. And some are touting "Baldur's Gate 3" for sparking a DND gaming craze. These games all have legitimate reasons to be considered for "Game of the Year." However, "Starfield," which has high global attention, has not been released yet, so it's hard to say who will ultimately claim the title. Since there are well-received masterpieces, there are, naturally, terrible games as well. Games like "Forspoken," led by Square Enix, opened 2023 with a subpar performance. Following that, "Redfall" from Arkane Austin and "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum" from Daedalic Entertainment continually lowered players' expectations, and referring to these as "games" is almost an insult. Even though "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum" is considered quite bad, it lost to another "epic disaster," "Greyhill Incident." The competition for the title of "Worst Game of the Year" this year is fiercely contested. The fact that there is such a huge gap between games released in 2023 is surprising. It leaves players wondering what "monstrosities" are yet to be released in the remaining three months. On the other hand, many players are curious about what these low-rated games look like today. Let's begin with "Redfall." According to SteamDB statistics, "Redfall" currently has only 20 players, with a maximum of 61 players online in the past 24 hours. This is a significant contrast to the 6,124 players during the first four months since the game's release. "Redfall," released on May 2, 2023, had a catastrophic start due to its terrible graphics, lackluster level design, and various incessant bugs. With a 32% positive rating, it effortlessly claimed the 14th place on Steam's list of worst-reviewed games. The game's developer, Arkane Austin, almost ruined its reputation built up over two decades. Even our very own "Phil Spencer" lasted less than an hour before signing out, although he returned later to play for just over 2 hours. The fact that even the head of Xbox Game Studios was frustrated demonstrates that this game isn't just another run-of-the-mill failure. Now let's look at "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum," which has somehow "surpassed" "Redfall." According to SteamDB, "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum" has only a handful of players, whether looking at the current number of players or the maximum number of players over the last 24 hours. Of course, its peak player count was nothing spectacular either, at just 758 players. From a data perspective, "Redfall" indeed outperforms "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum." Since its release, "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum" has become a complete critical disaster. The game's hasty development led to numerous bugs and, arguably, it overshadowed all the negative reviews of "Redfall." To be honest, most gamers have a relatively lenient attitude toward games, but a game like "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum" that offers almost no redeeming qualities is quite rare. Even well-known media outlets like IGN and Gamespot bluntly stated that "this game has no experiential value whatsoever." Now, after looking at these top-tier "disasters," we increasingly realize that "Forspoken" should be removed from the list of "Worst Game of the Year." At least Square Enix dared to innovate in terms of the theme, and the game achieved high online player counts at its peak. "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum" and "Greyhill Incident" are truly the top-tier "disasters" with hardly anything positive to offer. Although this statement applies to "Redfall" as well, its optimization issues are far from the league of "Forspoken" and "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum." So, Mr. Phil Spencer, you may continue to occupy a place on the "Worst Game of the Year" list. Of course, 2023 has not ended yet, and the future is uncertain. Who knows, maybe there will be a latecomer like "Diablo 4" that surprises us? We hope that Blizzard's game designers continue to excel, as achieving the "lowest Metacritic score in history" is also quite an achievement. In conclusion, 2023 has indeed been a "fantastic" year with great titles like "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" and "Baldur's Gate 3" alongside the likes of "Redfall" and "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum." Just when everyone thought "Redfall" represented the lowest quality in gaming, "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum" arrived, only to be surpassed by "Greyhill Incident." Despite the dismal state of the gaming industry, it's not a reason to accept these "disasters." There's nothing more to say; we can only look forward to what surprises the remaining three months have in store for us.
