Is CD Projekt in trouble? They laid off hundreds of people in just 3 months! After the end of the Steam Summer Sale, "Cyberpunk 2077" saw a significant shift in both sales and reputation, with the game hitting its all-time low price. Currently, the game enjoys a "Very Positive" rating on Steam, with 80% of over 540,000 reviews being positive. This turnaround is quite impressive considering the troubled launch it experienced. As many are aware, "Cyberpunk 2077" faced a disastrous release in late 2020, with a plethora of bugs that made it nearly unplayable, even on high-end systems. The situation was even worse on console platforms, leading Sony to temporarily remove the game from its store. It was not only the bugs but also the severe backlash against the game's developers, CD Projekt Red (CDPR), that tarnished its reputation, with the main issue being the official "misleading marketing." Fortunately, through nearly three years of patches and fixes, the game's reputation has improved somewhat, offering a degree of satisfaction to the players who initially supported it. Additionally, CDPR has been working on the highly anticipated expansion, titled "Cyberpunk 2077: The Past," which is touted as the "largest-budget" expansion and is set to be released on September 26th. Early impressions of "The Past" from various media outlets have been quite positive, suggesting a rekindling of the game's glory. There have been many games in the past that faced controversies related to "false advertising," but few have managed to recover their reputation later on. One notable example is "No Man's Sky," released in 2016. "Cyberpunk 2077" seems to be another exception to the rule, making a comeback. Whether CDPR can fully regain its former glory remains uncertain, especially given the company's recent decisions. Just two days ago, CDPR announced that it would restructure its organization and lay off about 10% of its employees, which amounts to nearly 100 people. CDPR's Vice President, Adam Kiciński, stated that this decision was made after careful consideration, with the goal of delivering high-quality games. The affected employees will not be offered alternative positions in the company. Adam Kiciński also mentioned the company's ambition to create the best role-playing games, necessitating a leaner and more efficient team due to the current team's surplus workforce. Some employees will be let go in the first quarter of 2024. The games mentioned by Adam Kiciński in the announcement include the new trilogy for "The Witcher" series, the sequel to "Cyberpunk 2077," and the "Starlight" spin-off project. This sums up to five projects in total. It's strange that CDPR decided to lay off employees at such a critical juncture when they are working on five new projects, requiring a considerable number of developers. Adam Kiciński's explanation is not very convincing. It's worth noting that CDPR has laid off over 160 employees over the past three months. In March, they announced the reboot of "The Witcher" spin-off project, "Starlight," which led to the termination of 29 employees from The Molasses Flood studio within two months. CDPR did not disclose reasons for this move. In early June, more than 30 employees working on "Gwent: The Witcher Card Game" were laid off as development on the project ceased. Reports of extreme overwork at CDPR have been common, and "The Past" expansion was developed by diverting resources from other projects, which doesn't align with the narrative of "overstaffing." However, the reality may not be exactly as it appears, and whether the layoffs are due to "overstaffing" or poor company management remains known only to CDPR. All we can do is patiently await the release of their new projects. What do you think about this situation?
