AI can't do adult content? A borderline game generated by artificial intelligence was taken down by Valve! In the past year and a half, discussions have consistently revolved around the topic of "AI." The rapid learning capabilities of AI have had varying impacts on various industries. In the field of art, AI drawing software like "DALL-E" and "Stable Diffusion" have caused distress among many artists. In the realm of literature, there are large conversational language models like "ChatGPT" that excel in tasks such as writing, chatting, and even coding. This highlights the profound influence of AI on human development. As one of the hotbeds of technological innovation, the gaming industry has also been presented with new opportunities and challenges by AI technology. Initially, AI was primarily used for "illustration creation," but as programs improved and human creativity provided endless ideas, AI has reached a point where it can independently generate entire game narratives and even describe an entire game using textual language. It is foreseeable that AI, evolving continuously, will eventually be capable of autonomously managing an entire game development process, including scriptwriting, character design, art creation, and coding, which underscores that the concept of "AI replacing humans" is not mere speculation. However, along with the application of AI technology comes legal disputes and copyright issues. News about "AI infringing on artists' rights" serves as a constant reminder of the potential uncertainties and risks in the world of AI. Considering the peculiarities of "adult content" in conjunction with AI, determining the copyright ownership of AI-generated content poses an even more challenging issue. However, while most developers and companies are avoiding this issue, the largest global digital gaming platform has offered its own perspective. Recently, a game developer named "Potterharry97" posted on Reddit, claiming that the game they created was taken down from the Steam platform due to the AI-generated content it contained. Valve Corporation (often referred to as "V") gave the reason for the takedown as follows: "AI would lead to more complex copyright disputes," and they stated in an email that "the ownership of AI-generated artistic assets is unclear in the eyes of the law." Valve Corporation went on to say that they would not list any games containing AI-generated content unless the developer owns the intellectual property rights for the data used to train the AI. According to Potterharry97, Valve Corporation took a significantly longer time to process this case than the time required for his previously uploaded games to be approved. He had to wait for a whole week to receive a verdict. Due to the prolonged review period, the game had sold a substantial number of copies on Steam. Consequently, Valve Corporation issued refunds to the users who had purchased the game. It appears that Valve Corporation has not yet established a standardized procedure for games involving AI-generated content. The game created by Potterharry97 is named "Hentai Puzzles: The Origin," and it's evident from the title that it's a "borderline" jigsaw puzzle game, imitating the "Hentai Puzzles" series available on Steam. However, the distinguishing feature of this game is that all the visual artwork has been drawn by AI. Potterharry97 noted that the inspiration for the game came from the "adult games" that occasionally make their way to the best-seller lists on Steam. Since Potterharry97 had previous experience in programming, he decided to utilize AI to complete this project. During its time on Steam, "Hentai Puzzles: The Origin" sold several hundred copies, with data indicating that it was played nearly every day in June. However, unfortunately, the game has been removed from Steam by Valve Corporation citing "copyright issues." Upon seeing his game, which he described as a "time-consuming" effort, removed from the platform, Potterharry97 sought to make amends. He believed that Valve Corporation did not find any inherent issue with his game and that it could be re-listed if all AI-generated content was removed. However, Potterharry97's attempts were in vain. Even after renaming the game to "Hentai Puzzles: Attack on Tight Panties" and asserting that there were "no obvious signs of AI involvement in the game," Valve Corporation still did not approve the game. It's important to note that Valve Corporation has not rejected all games that include AI-generated content. For example, "This girl does not exist" by Cute Pen Games, released in September of last year, is still available on Steam. The game explicitly states that "everything you see here, including the artwork, story, characters, and even voiceovers, was generated by a machine learning AI." Clearly, "This girl does not exist" is a game in which all content, from start to finish, is generated by AI. It's not entirely clear why Valve Corporation chose not to take down this game, possibly because it does not involve explicit adult content. In today's world, as AI technology matures, it is becoming increasingly common for games to incorporate AI into their development process. Valve Corporation's refusal to list games involving AI content may be because they lack a clear set of review standards. Given the range of unclear factors, this cautious approach makes sense to avoid potential trouble and controversy. The boundaries of AI-generated works remain a subject that requires significant exploration and refinement.
