The tragedy of the Titanic is playing out again! But this horror game is becoming a hit? Recently, the "Titan Submersible Incident" has attracted widespread attention worldwide. On June 18th, local time, a 5-person tourist submersible named "Titan" submerged in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 1400 kilometers east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. However, after approximately 1 hour and 4 minutes, the "Titan" suddenly lost contact, leading to search and rescue efforts by the United States, Canada, and other countries in the area. After more than 80 hours of searching, the Coast Guard found the shattered parts of the 5-person submersible not far from the wreckage of the Titanic, declaring that all passengers on board had tragically perished. Following this accident, people all over the world kept a close eye on the situation. Accidents of this catastrophic nature are undoubtedly painful tragedies for everyone involved. However, as the details of the accident gradually emerged, people's focus started to take a strange turn. First, the internal structure of the tourist submersible was exposed, revealing that the interior space was cramped and very rudimentary, with the best seat appearing to be a toilet. Later, news came out that the control mechanism for steering the tourist submersible was a 2010 Logitech F710 wireless game controller. While there was no direct evidence linking the accident to this inexpensive game controller, it provided some amusement for internet users. But even more bizarre things were to come. A game on Steam called "Iron Lung" unexpectedly gained popularity after the incident. "Iron Lung" is a horror adventure game developed by David Szymanski, released on March 10, 2023. It features rough graphics and a small file size of less than 200MB, and the player's character can only move within the narrow confines of a submersible. They can only see the outside environment through a camera. In reality, "Iron Lung" is a well-crafted, low-cost game. Its eerie and unpredictable setting, coupled with excellent atmospheric design, makes it stand out among independent games. The enclosed space, the vast depths of the ocean, the rudimentary submersible, and occasional eerie sounds create an overwhelming sense of despair and oppression for players. The game's ending involves the submersible reaching its final destination but gradually taking on water due to hull damage before being torn apart by a massive sea monster. Throughout the game, there are no direct horror elements like gore or monsters, and instead, it relies on stacking details to create a sense of dread. However, the dimly lit ocean floor, confined setting, the protagonist with no depth perception, the decrepit submersible, and the tragic ending all bear a striking resemblance to the "Titan Submersible Incident." As a result, people began calling "Iron Lung" the "Titan Simulator," and it quickly gained a surge in sales on Steam. Looking at the game's Steam reviews, many recent players have commented for the sake of curiosity, jokingly referring to "Iron Lung" as a "$6 simulation of a $250,000 Titan submersible experience." Using a game to make light of a tragic real-life accident can be seen as a dark form of humor. Nonetheless, the surge in the game's sales cannot be denied, and it caught the attention of the game's developer, David Szymanski. The developer acknowledged the incident, saying on Twitter, "We noticed the Titan submersible incident, and it put us in a 'nightmare-like' awkward situation. Creating 'Iron Lung' was all about presenting players with an oppressive horror game, not making fun of a real-life tragedy. The black humor from players makes us very uncomfortable." Of course, it might seem "strange" to hear such words from the developer, as the surge in sales translates to significant financial gains. In the comments section of related news, a common animated GIF that says "Wiping tears with money" is used to continue this dark joke. In the ending credits of the game "Iron Lung," there's a particularly conspicuous green text that provides the final narrative. The text generally suggests that the submersible has been torn to pieces, with no one able to reach the wreckage, leaving behind endless despair. However, there's an additional paragraph at the end: "Somewhere in the void, there must still be hope." Presumably, the author wanted to convey the message to players who had experienced the game: "Never give up, no matter the circumstances!" Finally: Fear nature, and cherish your life!
